How much does 3D printing cost? Pricing factors explained

One of the most common questions we receive is: 'How much does 3D printing cost?'. The answer isn't straightforward, as the price of custom 3D printing depends on several factors. In this article, we explain what makes up the final cost of a 3D printing service.

The most significant factor affecting 3D printing pricing is the printer's operating time. The larger and more complex the model, the longer it takes to print. Print time also depends on the chosen resolution (layer height) – higher quality means longer time and a higher price.

Another element is material (filament) consumption. The cost depends on the weight of the finished part and the type of material chosen. Standard materials like PLA or PETG are cheaper, while specialized filaments (e.g., TPU, nylon, carbon fiber reinforced materials) increase the print cost.

Infill is another key parameter. 3D models are rarely printed 100% solid inside. Usually, an infill of 15-30% is used, which provides adequate strength while saving material and time. Higher infill means a higher price.

Costs can increase if the model requires complex supports that need to be removed later, or if post-processing is necessary (e.g., sanding, gluing multiple parts). 3D design is also an additional cost if you don't have a ready STL file.

How to reduce 3D printing costs? Optimize the model for printing (avoid large overhangs requiring supports), choose a lower infill if the part doesn't carry heavy loads, and opt for a standard layer resolution (e.g., 0.2mm), which is perfectly sufficient in most cases.
